A Stochastic Modeling Approach for Interplanetary Supply Chain Planning

The unique and complex challenges of sustainable interplanetary travel necessitate a novel space logistics paradigm, which is hereafter referred to as the supply chain. To lay groundwork for this anticipated paradigm shift, work aims introduce principles methodologies chain (SC) planning field logistics. end, stochastic multistage mixed integer linear programming model proposed that explores vision permanent human presence on Mars from standpoint. optimizes material flows, propellant production, in-space infrastructure allocations identify optimal SC network design. Notably, demand uncertainty at base considered, makes it first investigate effects stochasticity in planning. Several case studies are investigated, incorporate data Earth–Mars transfer windows flight trajectories obtained through National Aeronautics Space Administration’s trajectory browser. results reveal numerous interdependencies and, thus, highlight need holistic modeling approaches go beyond isolated mission extant literature. For instance, findings show frequent interactions among spacecraft they regularly engage division labor regarding cargo transportation. Moreover, networks involve strategic allocation production celestial bodies established. Overall, developed provides valuable insights into travel, offers new perspective, lays foundation future research area.
